The most common cause for this error is that you don’t have your outgoing mail set to “require authentication”. This setting can be changed in your mail properties for this email account.
1. In outlook Express, click on “Accounts” in the “Tools” menu which will open the “Internet Accounts” window.
2. A list of email accounts will be showing there. Highlight your email account by clicking once on its name and then select the “Properties” button.
3. Click on the “Servers” tab. The important part you need to change here is placing a check mark in the box labeled “My server requires authentication”. After checking that, select the “Settings” button next to it.
4. Please select “Log on using” and then enter the same information you use to check email, namely your email address and the associated password. Do NOT check the box that says to “Log on using Secure Password Authentication”.
5. Once you finish configuring that, click the OK button and then another OK button on the email account properties screen. That should complete the setup and allow you to start sending and receiving email with your account.
Another reason for not being able to send mail is that your ISP is blocking you from sending out emails from an account other than theirs. This is most common with people using Optimum Online as their internet provider. There are 2 options around this.
1. Use your ISP’s mail server to send out your mail. To make this change follow steps 1 and 2 above, click on the “Servers” tab and enter your ISP’s mail server in the “Outgoing Mail (SMTP)” field. For Optimum Online you can enter “mail.optonline.net” without the quotes. Follow step 5 above.
2. If that doesn’t work, or if you don’t know your ISP mail server you can try sending out mail using a different port. To make this change follow steps 1 and 2 above, click on the “Advanced” tab and under the “Outgoing Mail (SMTP)” field change the port number from 25 to 24. Follow step 5 above.
